The Story of Dubai Expo: Creating Hope in Times of Upheaval
From October 2021 to March 2022, the UAE hosted Expo 2020 Dubai – the first ever World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region since the World Expos began in 1851. Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy was the minister responsible.
While still in her thirties, HE Reem led and won the bid to host Expo, ahead of Russia, Turkey, Brazil and Thailand. She headed a world-class workforce of 3,000 people to create an exceptional exhibition and a lasting legacy - now Expo City Dubai. Despite enormous challenges, including the Covid pandemic, which delayed the opening by a year, Expo attracted close to 25 million visitors and welcomed 192 participating countries, more than any previous World Expo.
In When Ground Shifts, HE Reem writes about her own steep learning curve, combining a high-profile role and a young family. She describes the international and personal challenges she faced leading a team which went on to stage one of the most unifying and groundbreaking international events of this century, for the first time providing an equal platform for exhibitors of all nations.
A story of success from the heart of Arabia, When Ground Shifts challenges stereotypes and prejudices about the Middle East. It offers an inspirational picture of what is possible for women and girls in the region and beyond, and sheds new light on a more hopeful vision for international relations at a time of global shifts and realignment. The book also offers the fascinating wider context of the Emirates and its role not only in large international events such as Expo and COP but also as a broker between nations and a leading country in the Global South.
